NHL's Pride Nights were once a cause for celebration. However, following objections from certain players last season, it transformed into a controversial topic for the league.

Controversy Surrounding Pride Night

In an attempt to address the matter, the NHL sent a memo to all teams for the 2023-24 season. But, as many might expect from the league, the directive is both perplexing and vague.
More than eight teams, the source said, raised concerns about part of the memo that stated, "Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s). - NHL memo on Pride Nights

From this, it appears the NHL is not only hinting at stopping all specialty nights but also suggesting teams avoid positioning players near such events, if they do occur. Given the phrasing, it's understandable why teams were confused.

Theme Nights in Jeopardy

Apart from Pride nights, the NHL has hosted events like cancer awareness and military appreciation nights, among others. While smaller initiatives continue, it seems the larger theme nights might be phased out.
It's disheartening that objections from a handful of players who opted out of Pride nights last year might lead to such a development.
