Being a referee in the National Hockey League must be a hard job. Every fan of the sport understands that. However, the standard of officiating we have been given is so bad, most fans agree that something has to be done to change the way the game is officiated. Tonight we saw another blatant penalty missed in what could be a critical game for the Dallas Stars.

Hintz High-Sticked Near The Net But Referees Do Not Call Penalty

The play happened in the Stars offensive zone. The team was on the attack as Roope Hintz was open for a cross-ice or rebound play when Florida forward Kevin Stenlund clearly got him up high with his stick.
The referees were caught napping though as there was no call on the play. This is just the latest in a multiple season-long trend of poor officiating in the NHL. Minor penalties like this are missed all the time. At the same time, referees have been caught on hot mics awarding penalties even if they were not real.
While Mr. Peel was properly punished by the NHL for this incident, it is not enough for individual referees to take the blame for everyone. We all know Peel was not the only referee who liked to give out make-up calls. It is a very common practice. We just need to tell the league that this is not acceptable anymore.
