Phil Kessel is technically still the NHL's leading active ironman as he has not retired from the league. Rather, he is still hoping to sign with a team at some point this season. In the meantime though, he now seems to be considering other options.
According to NHL insider Pierre Lebrun, the 36-year-old three-time Stanley Cup champion is now considering 'playing some games' in Switzerland as a way to prepare himself for his potential NHL return. Kessel has not played any games this season, but he has been staying in shape at his Arizona home.
Notably, Kessel is very close to a major milestone in his NHL career. The veteran winger is just 8 points shy of hitting 1000 for his career. He has also expressed a willingness to end the ironman streak if it means securing a new NHL contract.
Now the only question that remains is whether or not he will get a chance to hit the milestone. Several teams have reportedly expressed interest in him earlier in the season, so perhaps there is still a path towards playing NHL games this season for Phil the thrill.
