If Milan Lucic ever wants to play in the NHL again, he's going to have to get by Gary Bettman first, who has the final say. It appears Bettman is saying no.

New Jersey is where Milan Lucic has been spotted training this summer to get into shape for an NHL return.
Currently, Milan Lucic is not allowed to return to the NHL after he was arrested in Boston last November for assault and battery. He pleaded not guilty, and all charges were eventually dropped in February. His wife refused to testify.
Following all of that, Milan Lucic took an indefinite leave of absence from the Boston Bruins and never returned to them. His contract has now expired and he's an unrestricted free agent (UFA).
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman needs to give the green light to Milan Lucic to be able to return to the NHL, and so far he has not done that and there does not appear to be any indication he's ever going to do that, which means Milan Lucic may never play again in the NHL. Lucic has now entered the NHLPA Player Assistance program.
Details to follow as more information becomes clear.
