Since 2017, the NHL have introduced two new teams in Vegas and Seattle, and given the immense success that both teams have been, it was just a matter of time until we saw expansion once again. With speculation swirling that the league is targeting 34 teams, it has now been reported that Gary Bettman and the NHL are set to approve just that, with the two front runners officially revealed.
Unsurprisingly, the front runners to land new NHL teams are Atlanta and Houston, as has been rumoured for quite some time, with the NHL set to surpass the NFL and go to 33 and eventually 34 teams, something that is quite divisive among the fan base. It's unclear at this point when the league are targeting expansion, and whether or not they'll introduce both new cities at the same time, but with a growing player base across the world, this is the move they are looking to make.
Speculation has revealed that the fee to join the NHL as a new team will now cost ownership groups upwards of $1 billion, so it's easy to see why the NHL are going down this route, so now, we simply wait for the announcement that the league are expanding once more.
