The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers continued their best-of-seven series on Friday night. The tension was already high with the Leafs needing to secure a victory, but the atmosphere became even more strained following a controversial play involving Leafs' player Morgan Rielly.
Rielly thought he had scored a goal, but it was later disallowed. The ruling was based on the determination that the puck had never fully crossed the goal line. When it finally did, it was under the skate blade of Florida Panthers' goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, but by then the whistle had already blown.
After a detailed review, the officials upheld the call made on the ice, affirming that there was no goal. Commenting on the situation, former NHL goalie Martin Biron explained,
"There was just no way to know, from the angles on TV, where the puck was exactly under Bob's pad."
The decision sparked outrage among some of the Leafs Nation fans present at the Scotiabank Arena. In response, they began to toss debris onto the ice. This prompted the announcer to request that fans refrain from littering the ice.
As play resumed, the chants of «Bullsh**t» echoed throughout Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.
