It's no secret that Toronto Maples Leafs forward William Nylander is a pending UFA after this coming NHL season.
With his teammate
Auston Matthews signed long-term, all the attention has been on the controversial Leafs winger, with trade speculation rampant.
New Leafs GM Brad Treliving will have a major decision to make if he in unable to get Nylander signed before the start of the year. Does he ride the year out with Nylander and risk losing him for nothing just like he did with Johnny Gaudreau in Calgary? Or does he trade him for the best package possible?
This has led to members of the Toronto media making mock trades.
Must read on Daily Hockey Dose
Journalist Michael Traikos, who covers the Maple Leafs, has created a mock trade which would send Nylander to arch-rivals the Montreal Canadiens.
The deal would see Nylander moved to Quebec for a monster return, one Habs fans probably won't like. Here is the trade:
"[In case of a trade] Canadiens' fans won't like the return! I believe that the names Caufield, Slafkovsky, and Guhle would be in the discussions." - Traikos
This is an insane price for the rebuilding Habs to give up. Those three players are the future of the organization, and it would be ridiculous to give them up for what could end up being a one year rental.
Even if Nylander was to re-sign in Montreal, he would likely cost up to $10 million per year, which would be tough to swallow for a talented yet inconsistent player.
Traikos offered his thoughts on Nylander:
"Nylander is a dynamic player, with a good stride and who can score. But sometimes, he can disappear for two weeks and become invisible."
One thing is for certain, this would be a trade to remember just based off of the reactions of both fanbases.
