A new rumor has surfaced connecting the Toronto Maple Leafs to a goaltender that could solve their issues at the position.
Maple Leafs Connected To Starting Goalie By A New Rumor
A post on Instagram this afternoon by Leafs Latest has suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs could be in on a new starting goalie. According to the rumor that originally came from Kent Wilson of The Calgary Sun the Calgary Flames could be interested in offloading starter Jacob Markstrom.
Rumors: The Leafs among a hand full of other teams are seen as a potential fit for Flames G Jacob Markstrom.
Jacob Markstrom has been connected to the Maple Leafs in the past. However, the Flames had been unwilling to part with the veteran goaltender to this point. If the Maple Leafs were to take a run at getting Markstrom would it be worth the price?
Could Markstrom Solve The Maple Leafs Goaltending Issues?
This season the Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled heavily with their goaltending. Presumed starter Ilya Samsonov was sent to the minors after struggling and needing a reset. Young goalie Joseph Woll will be out for a significant amount of time with an injury. This has left Martin Jones to carry the load in recent weeks.
The Calgary Flames have not been good this year and with Jacob Markstrom being 33 years old moving on from him could be the right move. This decision is made easier due to the success of goalie prospect Dustin Wolfe in the AHL.
If the Flames are going to move on from Markstrom they would be able to fetch a huge haul. Despite the Flames being a bad team Markstrom has still played well keeping his value high. The Maple Leafs would need to part with high picks and one or two of their top prospects.
The Maple Leafs would need to carefully consider if Markstrom can be the missing piece to help them win a Stanley Cup. If he's not then taking on his contract for the next three seasons could be detrimental.
