Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson has been in trade rumors basically his entire career thanks to his team not being that great. According to insider Elliotte Friedman, this may finally be the year where we see him moved.
Friedman Reveals Two Eastern Conference Teams Are Targeting Gibson
Friedman revealed on 32 thoughts today that the Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for the possibility that Freddie Andersen may not play again this year due to his newly discovered medical issues. As a result, he believes the team may be interested in Ducks goaltender John Gibson. He also adds that the Devils could be interested as well, given their goaltending performances this year.
Elliotte talks about John Gibson and wonders if Carolina or New Jersey could be interested because of their current goalie situations. Says Carolina is prepared for the chance Frederik Andersen doesn't play again this year. #FlyTogether #CauseChaos #NJDevils #NHL #NHLHockey
Gibson Performing Well Despite Poor Team In Front Of Him
Much has been said about Gibson's quality of play in the past few seasons. While his numbers have taken a hit in recent years, it is hard to blame him considering the teams he's played behind. This year though, he has been performing solidly above average despite the Ducks poor defensive structure. He has a .906 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against-average. So far this season, the league average save percentage is .903 and the goals-against-average is 2.95.
The advanced stats paint a similar picture for Gibson. He is solidly above average. He very well could elevate his performance behind a better team if a contender does ultimately trade for him.
At this point, Gibson may be the Ducks most valuable trade asset as well, unless they decide to trade Trevor Zegras as many have speculated. Regardless, it will be an interesting trade deadline to watch for the Ducks.
