The Detroit Red Wings susprised a lot of people this season. With 20 games remaining, they're currently at the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. They're followed closely by many teams looking to make a push for the playoffs, such as the Islanders, Penguins and Capitals.

Considering that they're in a great position to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016, we could see general manager Steve Yzerman going all-in and make acquisitions at the deadline.

Red Wings to Go After Pittsburgh Penguins' Jake Guentzel on the Trade Market?

The Penguins are reportedly looking to part ways from Guentzel. The forward will be a free agent after the current season and could bring an interesting return to Pittsburgh if Dubas decides to trade him. Many top teams have already been linked to Guentzel, such as the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knight. Interestingly, the Red Wings have also been in the discussions.
However, the insider Elliotte Friedman mentionned that Yzerman probably won't go after Guentzel.
"It fits [in Detroit], but it's not like Yzerman to give players like that seven-year extensions."

Guentzel will ask for more money next season. If Dubas wants to get the most out of him on the market, he'll try to work with the other team so that Guentzel isn't a loan, but comes with an extension.
According to Friedman, it's not Yzerman's style to give big extensions to players like that.
The Red Wings' general manager already has a lot on his table: he has to sign both Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider this summer. He won't go after a big fish on the market like Guentzel if it means to lose either of these guys.
This doesn't mean that the Red Wings won't be active at the deadline, but they'll likely go after other players, who don't cost as much as Guentzel.
