Hockey analyst Kevin Papetti shared a strategy to open up millions in the Toronto Maple Leafs' cap space without trading away their core players.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had the longest Stanley Cup drought in NHL history, now nearing sixty years without a big win. GM Brad Treliving has made it clear he is willing to make whatever changes it takes to turn around their misfortune. Among these changes were Chris Tanev with free agency hours away' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>acquiring Chris Tanev to a six-year contract, and making three players available for trade as announced on the Chris Johnston Show.
"They would look at moving Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Timothy Liljegren in the right deal. I should be very clear, that is not to say they are trying to get rid of them at all costs, but I think that because of the Leafs' salary cap, they are pretty tight up against it. Really, at this point of the off-season, their blueline looks different, obviously made the move in net, but I think they will have to get creative to address any changes they want to make at forward."
With the Leafs over budget but still looking to make changes, an unexpected plan may need to occur. Consequently, NHL analyst Kevin Papetti revealed that opens $7.4 million in cap space, which trades a few players Johnston mentions but none of Toronot's core players.
"It won't happen, but here's a look at how much cap space the Leafs could create by trading depth players.

Out: Liljegren, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Reaves, and Timmins.

Cowan, Minten, and Rifai can be replaced by other <$1M players.

This team has $7.4M in space and a 7th D."

Though not all the players Papetti proposed are on the trade block, the Maple Leafs may need to follow through with one of these deals to fall under their cap limit. If not, they could face a penalty and face yet another year with the Cup.
