The controversy in question has to do with Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif. She was competing against Italian Angela Carini when she defeated her in less than a minute. Notably, this was early in the tournament-style format, so Khelif did not win a medal as a result of her win in this fight. However, she did suddenly experience an intense backlash from the internet, who are out to prove that she is a trans woman. This stems from a mysterious failed test in 2022 that supposedly proved she had a Y chromosome, only present in men. However, the methodology of that test, nor the results have ever been made public and Imane has been allowed to continue to participate in events as normal since then. All legal documentation also indicates that Imane was born as a cis-gender woman and that she has never been anything else.
When asked about the controversy, Price implied that is is 'common sense' that trans women should not be allowed to participate in sporting events against cis-gender women. With this comment, she also seems to imply that she believes Imane is transgender. Notably, in her post responding to the question, she included a picture of Mike Tyson, badly photoshopped with women's hair and sports bra in order to make him look more like a woman. Price did not explain the inclusion of the picture.
Khelif has since gone on to clinch at least a bronze medal after she won another fight today. The IOC continues to support her right to compete in the events, dismissing questions about her gender identity. The IOC has very strict procedures to make sure that all athletes meet all the requirements before they are allowed to compete. Price has not commented on the situation again.
