Belgian triathlon athlete Claire Michel has been hospitalized after participating in the 2024 summer games in Paris, prompting concerns about event safety.

Michel was training by swimming in the Seine river, along with many other Olympians as the river is part of the triathlon competitions. Notably, swimming in the river has been banned by the French government since 1923 due to dangerous levels of E. Coli bacteria. The city made a special exception for the games, which has clearly backfired in a major way.

The mixed triathlon is supposed to take place tomorrow, but now the event is in question due to the ongoing health crisis. The Olympics communication director Anne Descamps revealed shortly after Michel's hospitalization that there will be an announcement regarding the event before the scheduled start time.

Unfortunately, Michel is not the only one dealing with an illness due to swimming in the river. Swiss athlete Adrien Briffod has also withdrawn from competitions due to a GI infection, which was likely contracted in the river.
Belgium has pulled out of the mixed relay triathlon after Claire Michel fell ill following a swim in the River Seine at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Switzerland also faces issues, with Adrien Briffod withdrawing due to a gastrointestinal infection.

High levels of E. coli and pollution in the water are making athletes sick, with organizers only approving the water quality after postponing meets due to heavy contamination.

Concerns grow as multiple athletes experience health issues linked to the water quality.
Understandably, this has resulted in a lot of backlash from fans of the Olympics. No one believes that these world class athletes should have to compete in such terrible conditions.
They are making these poor athletes swim in a toxic river. Olympics should be ashamed of the display this year.
Hopefully the IOC will agree to reschedule the event and put it in a spot that is safe to actually compete in. We will just have to wait for official word.
