The Paris 2024 Olympics have been underway for quite some time now, and although the events have been pretty tame on the injury front, that all changed today during the men's 3000m steeplechase.
Lamecha Girma, who hails from Ethiopia, was on the second to last straightaway of the race when his knee caught a hurdle and he tumbled to the ground.
Initial impact appeared to be to his shoulder, but unfortunately his head and back to the brunt of the fall, as he lay motionless on the track while medical professionals rushed to his aid.

After the fall occurred, many fans of the Olympics took to social media to send their prayers to Girma, as many were shaken up by the scary fall.
Commentator Leigh Diffey, who was doing the commentary on the streaming platform Peacock, was shaken up as well, stating it was the first time he had seen something like this happen while calling steeplechase.
«In 40 years of commentating running and the steeplechase, I have never seen a fall that heavy.»
After being tended to on the track for a few minutes by medical professionals, Girma was placed in a neck brace and lifted onto a stretcher, seemingly still unconscious as they carried him off the track.
Fans and concerned onlookers have taken to social media looking for an update on Girma's condition, and while the privacy of his family and for Girma himself is the number one priority, fans can't help but wonder if the Ethiopian athlete is ok.
Hopefully there will be an update soon, but all we can do now is wait.
