Former Leaf and TSN broadcaster Carlo Colaiacovo recently took his time on First Up to call out Toronto's failing development strategy.

Before he was a TSN broadcaster and analyst, Carlo Colaiacovo was an NHL defenseman, playing in the league for more than a decade. After moving around between four other teams, he played his last game with the Buffalo Sabres in the 2015-16 season. Over his career, he recorded 157 points in 470 games.
However, Colaiacovo's longest stay on any single NHL team was a 6-year stint with the Maple Leafs. Having first-hand knowledge as a former Toronto defenseman and the insight of an on-air analyst, he held no prisoners in breaking down the team's primary failure in a recent edition of TSN's 'First Up.' He, like many fans, believes the team has failed at the hands of front-office staff in charge of drafting and development, stating they rarely pull in defensemen for the long haul.
"The only thing that I do agree with on these rankings are drafting and development. Like, they deserve a C because, I've stated all along, and this goes to when Kyle Dubas was managing this team. When you put yourself in a position to build a salary structure with your team where you're going to build around four forwards, okay, and it's going to occupy a large percentage of your cap; almost half of your cap: How the heck, organizationally, you did not decide to draft and develop more stud defenseman, is beyond me. Like, that's what has kept this organization back, is that since Morgan Rielly, what defenseman has this team drafted that developed that has been a stud on defense? Justin Holl, Sandin, Liljegren. Like, that's where the organizational failure has been with this— with this team, is that, if built around four forwards and you just continue to draft forwards to play with those guys, it's like: Hey, draft and develop big, stud defenseman so that up at this point here, you got guys that're probably be in their third or fourth years an absolute stud on your blue line. Instead, now, you talk and they get a D+ for trading. Well yeah, they get a D+ for trading because every year they're trying to trade for a defenseman, give up draft picks, and— and patchwork that defense to sort of give them a chance to win instead of drafting and developing these guys and in your system for three— three to six, seven years. That's been the organizational failure for this Maple Leafs team."
It is no surprise that a former Toronto defenseman has issues with their current lack thereof. However, his case is more than just thoughts of his personal history with the team. The Maple Leafs have had a habit of trying to make trades for defense players developed elsewhere in the NHL, costing them a lot more than starting with prospects right out of the draft. Yet, with the team so focused on maintaining their Core 4, it would be no surprise if the leadership decided instead to just fire coaching staff again for their poor draft decisions instead of heeding Carlo Colaiacovo's advice.
