After the tragic events surrounding Adam Johnson in England recently, we've seen a wave of support for extra protection in hockey, and now we've seen one NHLer take a massive step towards introducing it into the NHL.
A big step for Dahlin
While the NHL can't currently mandate extra protective equipment, players are being encouraged to explore their options, and after several Winnipeg Jets were spotted practicing in it, Rasmus Dahlin has become the first player in the NHL to wear the extra protection on the ice.
Rasmus Dahlin is wearing the neck protection tonight.
We've also seen the WHL and several NHL teams mandate the protection for their ECHL and AHL teams, and with Dahlin and the Jets steps today, it likely won't be long until this becomes the norm at the very top level.
While some may find it uncomfortable or not like the look of it, there's no denying that the positives outweigh the negatives for the extra protection, so this is a great first step for Dahlin.
