Mitch Marner's name has been linked to many trade rumors of late and a new trade proposal has fans divided.
A new trade proposal emerges sending Marner to the Hurricanes
It is no question that Mitch Marner is one of the best forwards in the NHL. Scoring at a 100-point pace each of the past three seasons, Marner has shown he is worth his near $11 million contract.
However, the Leafs may need a major shake-up that involves trading Marner away for assets that balance out the team better and sets them up for years to come.
That is where this proposal found on CapFriendly was thought of.
Your first thoughts may be that this is a massive underpay or a massive overpay, I've heard both.
An In-Depth Examination
The Leafs would be receiving four assets for Marner and each one holds some value.
Seth Jarvis is the main piece in this trade. Taken with the Leafs' first-round pick in 2020 they traded to Carolina to get rid of Patrick Marleau, Jarvis has ties to Toronto despite never playing there. While he had an up-and-down season, he finished it off strong playing on the first line and accruing 10 points in 15 playoff games.
Stefan Noesen is sort of a throw-in piece. Having ties to the Leafs and playing 1 game for them in 2020, he had a career year in Carolina scoring 13 goals and 36 points mainly as a powerplay net front specialist, he is certainly a piece the Leafs could plug into the bottom six.
Brett Pesce is a huge piece in this deal. While he only has one year left on his contract, he is an elite shutdown defenseman who the Leafs could utilize in their top 4. Pesce was linked to the Leafs for the entire William Nylander saga with a popular fan trade being Nylander for Pesce one-for-one. Now Leafs fans would not take that deal but it was very popular at the time.
The 2023 first-round pick is valuable and with 2023 having the best draft class since 2015, we could see there be Sebastian Aho, Roope Hintz, or a Kirill Kaprizov-caliber player with that pick. It would be dependent on the Leafs' scouting department but with them doing a very solid job over the past few years, I trust them to make the right pick.
The Hurricanes get the best player in the trade and it could push them over the hump. Marner is a Rod Brind'amour style player and he should gel in well in Carolina if he does get shipped there.
