Stanley Cup Winning Defenseman Enters Player Assistance Program

A former Stanley Cup Champion will be under the assistance of the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program.

Avs Defenseman Joins Player Assistance Program

Colorado Avalanche Defenseman Samuel Girard has entered the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program indefinitely, the NHL has confirmed.
Via Samuel Girard's agency, CAA Hockey, Girard issued a statement revealing he is taking time away from the time to take care of his struggles wirh mental health.
«I have made a proactive decision to take care of my mental health, and will be entering treatment for severe anxiety and depression that has gone untreated for too long and led to alcohol abuse. Taking care of your mental health is of the utmost importance, and I encourage everyone to speak up and seek help should you feel like you need it. I want to express my gratitude to my wife, family, friends, the club, my teammates, and the fans for their patience, understanding, and continued support."
TVA first reported that Girard would be taking an "indefinite leave" from the Avalanche organization.
Girard, 25, is a Stanley Cup Champion with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022, and has 4 Points in 15 games for the Avalanche this season, along with a career 29 Goals, 156 Assists & 185 Points in 431 Games Played. Girard was a 2nd Round Pick of the Nashville Predators in the 2016 NHL Draft, 47th Overall. As well as being a Stanley Cup Champion, Girard won a Hlinka Gretzky Gold Medal in 2015 and the QMJHL Defenseman of the Year Award in 2016.
