The Edmonton Oilers 2023-24 season has started poorly, with just a 1-5-1 record through seven games, but this past weekend may serve as a major turning point for this squad.

An angry visit

After that start, reports have now emerged of the Oilers getting a major visit to the locker room over the weekend, with General Manager Ken Holland delivering a stern message to the team.
Paul Coffey and Ken Holland — I believe — had a meeting with the team over the weekend,» said Frank Seravalli. «They asked them what kind of team they wanted to be: average, good, or great. That is going to sacrifice and effort, which you saw a bit more of that in the Heritage Classic with how hungry they were for pucks and other little details. Ultimately, despite a bunch of hurdles to start, they managed to stay afloat and take hold of the game. Sometimes teams need a jolt, and I wonder if, with everything that has happened, it will help set this team on the right course.

With the talent that has them as a Stanley Cup favourite, this visit could be the thing that turns around their struggling season, and they certainly showed that immediately after the event.

A Battle of Alberta victory

Then, the Oilers would go on to dominate their rival Calgary Flames in a 5-2 victory in the latest NHL Heritage Classic, highlighted by the return of Connor McDavid, who believes this is a big turning point.
"This is a good way for our group to come together in a unique environment."
Ultimately, they've still got plenty to work on, as they now sit in sixth place in the Pacific Division, but with McDavid back and plenty of talent on all three levels, this is a team that could get hot in a hurry, and if they do, credit this past weekend as a major turning point for their season.
