Jarmo Kekalainen was serious when he focused on strengthening the team's defense. He has now brought in his second defense player during the off-season.

Blue Jackets Get Severson

Damon Severson has been a key player for the New Jersey Devils over the past years. But now, with a chance to become a free agent and earn more money, he's been traded.
The Devils will give Severson a new eight-year contract worth $50 million, with an average yearly pay of $6.25 million, in a complex sign-and-trade agreement. After that, they'll trade him to the Blue Jackets.
A few days ago, Columbus got Ivan Provorov, showing the team's strong focus on defense.
The full return hasn't been announced yet, but Friedman reported that the Devils get at least a third round pick at the next draft.
