Auston Matthews scored a nifty goal last night and directed his celebration towards the crowd as they were previously booing the team. He had a cheeky remark after the game about his reason why.
Matthews Comments on Leaf Fans Booing During Last Night's Game
There is no question the Leafs came out to a disastrous start last night against the Lightning, going down 4-1 in the first period. However, a spurt of Auston Matthews' greatness brought them right back into the game. After his first goal, on a great pass from Matthew Knies, Matthews directed his celebration to the fans in response to their boos earlier in the game.
Matthews clarified the purpose of the celebration in a post-game interview, saying that he didn't want the crowd to give up on them just yet.
"After the first, just the energy and the boo's and stuff and rightfully so, but I didn't want them to go to sleep quite yet."
Matthews Led Team to Comeback Victory In Response to Low Energy Crowd
Matthews is definitely right, the boos and low energy from the crowd was an appropriate reaction to the start of the game, however, it appeared the Leafs used that as fuel for their comeback fire in the second and third periods. The comeback was led by a second Matthews goal and helpers from Marner and Jarnkrok.
