Old Takes Exposed

Auston Matthews is a Toronto Maple Leaf for at least the next four years, but that hasn't stopped the Internet from reminding people about how they thought he'd leave town early.
Whether it was to the Arizona Coyotes or elsewhere, you don't have to look that hard to see those kinds of takes. One of them came from none other than former Leafs GM Brian Burke, whose 2019 comments on Sportsnet's Prime Time Sports regarding Matthews' future have recently resurfaced.

In that clip, Burke had this to say about Matthews:
«I'll bet a very sizeable amount that he [leaves the Maple Leafs] because of the tax differential Any place in the States, even places with high income tax like California or New York City, any place in the States is still cheaper than here. The cost of living's cheaper, and you get to deduct the interest on your home mortgage. There's significant tax advantages. So yes, I believe that he's gone in five years."

Burke Left Holding the Bag

Matthews recently signed a four-year extension with an AAV of $13.25 million, and has made no secret of how much he loves Toronto and wants to remain a Maple Leaf. Fans of the team were quick to remember Burke's comments after the extension, as this TikTok will tell you.
Burke's thoughts may have held weight for some back in 2019, but let's hope he didn't actually bet «very sizeable» amounts of money on this happening. And with a $13.25 million annual salary, Ontario taxes likely aren't too much of a dealbreaker for Matthews — even if his home state of Arizona is a relative tax haven!
