Kyle Dubas's role as an NHL General Manager has sparked mixed reactions. While some believe he's overhyped, others think he's underestimated. However, it's evident that one of his best deals is continuing to pay dividends for his ex-team.
Dubas' Best Deal
Back in October 2021, Kyle Dubas held the position of the Toronto Maple Leafs' General Manager. His top defenseman, Morgan Rielly, was nearing the end of his contract. After long negotiations , Dubas managed to secure a contract that satisfied both parties.
Rielly had recently experienced a decline in points over the two COVID-hit seasons. This gave Dubas an edge in the negotiations, especially since Rielly had previously notched a 72-point season. The bond between Dubas and Rielly, based on their shared history with the team, undoubtedly played a role.
The outcome was Rielly returning to the Maple Leafs with an 8-year deal at a $7.50 million cap hit. This agreement, while appearing reasonable back then, now emerges as a brilliant move.
A Different Market for Defensemen
A recent trend highlights that defensemen are paid more that they were. A great example is Jake Sanderson's new contract, an 8-year extension with an $8.05 million cap hit.
Though Sanderson's rookie year saw him score 32 points across 77 games, he doesn't yet match the potential Rielly showcased when he signed his deal.
Buzz is also building around a possible deal for Rasmus Dahlin, estimated to be an 8-year contract with a cap hit around $10.5 million, following his standout season, where he scored 73 points in 78 games.
In perspective, Dubas's agreement with Rielly now appears even more strategic, costing $3 million less annually compared to a player who's only surpassed Rielly's highest point score by a single point.
