Last night, the Maple Leafs and Hurricanes participated in a spirited contest, with both teams being Eastern Conference leaders and emotions running high. Once again, officiating has been called into question.

During the 1st period, Calle Jarnkrok received a goaltender interference penalty for unclear reasons. While heading towards the net, the Canes' defender cross-checked Jarnkrok, leading the Leafs' forward to collide with their goalie. Despite the lack of intention to contact Kotchekov, Jarnkrok was still penalized.

Sheldon Keefe Could Face Fine After Confronting Officials

Keefe's criticism of this contentious call is not without precedent, as he has voiced dissatisfaction with officiating decisions in the past. In December, he was fined $25,000 for his demeaning conduct towards officials during a game in St. Louis.
Following this recent incident, Keefe might be subject to another fine for his actions towards the referees. As the league grapples with ongoing officiating concerns, many coaches seem to share Keefe's frustration.
The NHL must address the refereeing quality issue, as it has persisted for far too long.
