David Pagnotta, a writer from The Fourth Period, has reported that there's no resolution in sight between Auston Matthews and the Leafs, with Matthews unwilling to commit beyond five years. His words can be seen in the tweet below:
Naturally, Toronto's top priority would be to secure an extension for Matthews. The reluctance on his part to commit to more than a five-year contract, however, implies that he may not envision a lifelong tenure as a Maple Leaf.
This very well could push Toronto into a position where they may have to trade Matthews at some point. In the past season, Matthews showcased an impressive performance with 85 points recorded over 74 games. This will be the final year in his contract.
