Only hours after having the duties passed down to him by John Tavares, Auston Matthews has taken his first skate as the new captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
There was little doubt that Auston Matthews would one day become an NHL captain , with many believing he would take on the tole in Toronto years ago. However, after careful consideration, the Maple Leafs awarded the role to John Tavares in 2019.
However, most Leafs fans know that this has all changed. After a long series of discussions amongst team leadership members that transpired after their dreaded first-round loss to the Boston Bruins, Toronto opted to hand off the captaincy to Auston Matthews. Recently, the team held a press event where John Tavares officially handed off the rule with the symbolic 'C' marked jersey.
"I'm proud to announce Auston as the 26th Captain in Maple Leafs history."
Now, Auston Matthews finally hit the ice with his new role and jersey. In a recent Instagram Reel, the 26-year-old captain can be seen entering the rink grinning ear to ear, ready to take on the challenges of the upcoming season.
With 69 goals and 107 points in 81 games, there is no doubt that Auston Matthews will have a solid performance playing. Now that he will perform as the captain, hopefully, he can take the Toronto Maple Leafs to the next level.
