Auston Matthews was recently interviewed as to his upcoming captaincy with the Leafs, and he stated he wants to do whatever it takes to bring the Cup home.

In a conversation with Sportsnet's Luke Fox, Auston Matthews discusses his summer, embracing the mantle of team captain, and what he sees in the Leafs' future. There's always going to be big expectations in Toronto and Matthews knows he's going to be front and centre as they chase success.
The big news this offseason wasn't a trade or signing, it was the moment John Tavares passed the captaincy to Auston Matthews. With his new contract kicking in, Matthews now steps into the dual role as both face and voice of the team, something that could be a bit of an adjustment.
While it's a new title, the captaincy isn't exactly foreign soil that Auston Matthews has never tread in, because he's been an alternate captain for a little while. He doesn't intend to change his style and will, for sure, lean on experienced teammates like John Tavares to help lead the charge.
"As far as my leadership goes, I'm not maybe the most vocal guy in the locker room. But the past couple years I've felt more comfortable to speak up," Matthews said.

"I tend to just lead by example, trying to set the standard for our team whether it's in practice or in games. But I think over time, it's important to realize the impact that you have in the locker room."

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, much like the fans, Auston Matthews is looking for a Stanley Cup. With Brad Treliving wheeling and dealing with shoring up the 'D', bringing in a new goalie, and bringing in a new head coach, Matthews shared some of his thoughts on how it's all shaping up.
"I'm excited about our group. I really like our group a lot," said Matthews, who believes the team needs to continue pushing forward to crack through eventually.

"I'm extremely confident in it, despite maybe the lack of post-season success over the years."

Whether or not the Leafs will finally break their playoff curse remains to be seen, but for certain, Auston Matthews is prepared to go all out as both a player and captain to take this team as deep as possible this season.
