The Carolina Hurricanes appear to be wrapping up their offseason moves now that the regular season is less than a month away, announcing today that they have signed Sam Gagner to a professional tryout.

The news was first reported by the NHL fan-made site Puckpedia, which tracks current rosters, prospect pools, draft picks, and so on. The site has suddenly become much more popular after the better known capfriendly was purchased by the Washington Capitals and put offline this summer.

Oilers reporter Mark Spector took a moment to wish Gagner luck as he hopes to continue his NHL career in Carolina. Gagner has 570 career games played for the organization, so it is not surprising to see those around the team wishing him the best.
Gagner is certainly one of the older players in the NHL at 35, but he showed in a limited sample size last season that he can still be an effective player. He had 5 goals and 10 points for the Oilers in 28 games last season despite averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time per game and virtually none on the powerplay. That's a 33-point pace over the course of an 82-game season. Not bad coming from the fourth line. Furthermore, Gagner has over 1000 games of NHL experience under his belt, but he is still hoping for his first career Stanley Cup. Despite his lengthy career, he had just 11 games of experience in the playoffs due to playing for bad teams for much of his career.
In total, Gagner has appeared in 1043 regular-season games and has 197 career goals as well as 332 assists for 529 points. Should he have a good training camp, he very well could extend his career, hitting the 200 goal milestone, which is a very noteworthy accomplishment for any player. Perhaps he will even accomplish his dream of lifting the Stanley Cup.
