Brad Treliving, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, made a big mistake during the opening of free agency, which was just revealed by an insider.

While he managed to add important players like Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to the Leafs' blue line, it is believed that he could've hit a home run, but missed his shot.
Indeed, a new report revealed that Treliving had his eyes set on Matt Roy before he signed a six-year deal with the Washington Capitals.
"The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year, $34.5 million contract. Roy's contract will carry an average annual value of $5.75 million. "
In Toronto, the right-handed defenseman would've made a perfect candidate for the second pair, under Chris Tanev. Treliving had to turn to Ekman-Larsson for that role, while Roy will fill that position under John Carlson, in Washington.

The insider Chris Johnston even described him as the "one that got away". Check out his full declaration here:
"I think Matt Roy was a little bit of the one that got away. They were interested in Brady Skjei but that was pretty clear early on that, that wasn't going to be it. They called on Pesce, but I didn't get a sense that was ever (close). Roy was a big target."

"If you look at what he does, if you would have added Tanev and Roy, that is significant for your top four. That is literally two guys that play the right side that really can eat minutes and not a lot happens (offensively for the other team) when they are on the ice. You are talking about a different blueline. The Leafs, defensively, it has been a problem."

Drafted in the 7th round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, Roy scored 25 points last season, but his shutdown abilities provided an important defensive support to the Kings during their tough 2023-24 season.
