Leafs Insider Drops Bold Call: Nylander Must Switch Positions Before Season Opener

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a forward group loaded with talent, but with the 2024/25 season just a matter of weeks away, they still haven't officially revealed their line combinations. The team have plenty of questions to answer, such as where will Max Pacioretty fit in, can John Tavares still be a 2C on an elite team, where will Max Domi play after shifting to the top line a year ago to great success, but ultimately, it appears thing always come back to William Nylander.

Last year, the team tried to shift him to centre, but ultimately decided his best position would be on the wing, but now, according to Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, conversations may now be had about making that shift again, even if just as a trial through the pre-season.

The answer for Nylander perhaps lies with his former captain John Tavares, who was demoted to the 3C role a year ago, and if Domi shifts back to the top line alongside Auston Matthews, it may be the best role for him. That leaves the team without a 2C however, and this may be the motivation behind Toronto looking to make Nylander a centre, as it would help their depth, chemistry and consistency for years to come. One fan has put together line combinations if this is the team's thought process, and it's hard to argue that this gives the team fantastic depth and could be the team to make an impact in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Ultimately, Nylander has had incredible success on the wing, notching 40 goals in two straight years, and while some fans will be against the move, it could be for the better of the franchise for years to come, so we will see how it plays out moving forward.
