The Toronto Maple Leafs might be working on a trade for Jacob Markstrom, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
Considering their goaltending situation, it makes sense for the Leafs to pursue Markstrom this summer.
The Leafs are reportedly one of the teams (along with Ottawa and New Jersey) that have interest in Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom.
The Flames are actively shopping Markstrom, and there's interest in the goalie from the Leafs' point of view due to Brad Treliving's past with the Flames.
Ilya Samsonov won't be returning after an inconsistent and injury-filled season. Joseph Woll is seen as the goalie of the future, but he's not yet a proven NHL starter. Bringing in a solid veteran like Markstrom could help mentor Woll and ease him into the starting role over the next few seasons.
On 32T, Elliotte Friedman says the Flames are trying to do a Jacob Markstrom trade as quietly as possible, but there's "definitely something going on."
A lot of people are suspecting the #NJDevils are involved, but Toronto and Ottawa could be other teams interested too.
However, the Leafs might face some competition. The New Jersey Devils are currently the favorites to land the 34-year-old goalie. They reportedly tried to work out a deal for Markstrom for much of last season.
Flames general manager Craig Conroy was vague about Markstrom during his end-of-season interview, but it seems both sides expect a trade this summer.
