Today the Toronto Maple Leafs announced some exciting news as the team has signed a new player. On X the Maple Leafs announced the signing of defenseman Nicolas Mattinen out of the German DEL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a major splash on defense signing Nicolas Mattinen to an entry-level conract. The 26-year-old will come over from the Straubing Tigers of the DEL.

Nicolas Mattinen was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 2016 and will now finally join the team. In 52 DEL games this season he ended up with 46 points.
Well here's a funny one. The Leafs drafted Mattinen back in 2016 but didn't sign him. Now he's back after a standout season in Germany.

If Nicolas Mattinen can make the adjustment from European hockey back to North American and the NHL level he could be a huge addition for the Maple Leafs. The team is lacking a true offensive defenseman and now Nicolas Mattinen could be the answer.
