With little motion beyond his trade request to management, one reporter has suggested that Nick Robertson could reunite with his former GM Kyle Dubas in Pittsburgh.

Nick Robertson has played parts of our seasons with the Maple Leafs, scoring 17 goals and 17 assists in 87 career NHL games. Last year, he had his best season so far, recording 14 goals and 13 assists in 56 games. Despite this, he has asked Toronto GM Brad Treliving for a trade. Though management remained hopeful for a deal with the 22-year-old forward, Chris Johnston of First Up clarified that Nick Robertson would not budge on his request.
"I think, obviously, at this stage of the summer, the Leafs are working through what happens with Nick Robertson, but there's a pretty clear path for I'm to be part of the left wing, to potentially have a role that exceeds what he's had in the last. But at this stage, Nick Robertson doesn't seem inclined to sign in Toronto and is sticking to the idea that he'd like to play somewhere else. And so I think they have to kind of sort that out first or as part of this."
Though he is clearly trying to get away from Toronto, reports indicate that he may be set for a reunion with his former Maple Leafs GM. According to Pittsburgh Hockey Now's Dan Kingerski, Nick Roberston has been connected to Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Moreover, he implied that Brad Treliving would match a multi-million dollar offer to get more options in the trade market, suggesting 25-year-old forward Cody Glass.
"First, we can confirm that Dubas really likes Robertson[...]

Our industry sources in Toronto believe Toronto GM Brad Treliving would match a $2.29 million offer in order to effect a better trade. So, let's think out of the box just a bit. Let's say Dubas sends someone off his NHL roster, such as Cody Glass (with a 50% salary holdback), to Toronto for future considerations, then offer sheets Robertson, who agrees to about a $2 million deal. Toronto accepts the trade and declines to match, thus also receiving the Penguins 2025 third-rounder. It's similar to St. Louis quietly trading a second-tier player to Edmonton when they declined to match the offers for Holloway and Philip Broberg.
Though it may be tough to lose a player who could fill in a nearly empty left wing, Nick Robertson does not want to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs and could not be expected to play at his potential where he is unhappy. Whether or not he will go to the Pittsburgh Penguins, only time will tell.
