Just after losing goaltender Keith Petruzzelli to Lehigh Valley, the Toronto Maple Leafs are days away from losing rights to another promising prospect.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a bad luck streak across almost every aspect of their franchise. One of the most astounding trouble areas is their recent inability to keep rights to many of their prospects in the AHL. Among the latest of such cases was their loss of goaltender Keith Petruzzelli. After going 6-8-2 in the last season with the Toronto Marlies, he signed a contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers' AHL affiliate team.
"The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are signing goaltender Keith Petruzzelli to an AHL contract for 2024-25.

The 6-foot-6 former 2017-3rd round pick of Detroit went 6-8-2 with a 3.55 GAA & .867 SV% in 17GP with Toronto Marlies last year."
However, Toronto is days away from losing one more player. After too much time without receiving a solid offer from the Maple Leafs, 22-year-old forward Veeti Miettinen has signed a deal outside the NHL. The former 168th draft pick will soon start his career with KalPa of the Finnish Liiga.
"Veeti Miettinen has signed a two-year deal with KalPa (Kuopio, Finland) of the Finnish Liiga League."
Though he went in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL draft, Miettinen showed great promise during his rise to professional hockey through the NCAA. In his four seasons with St. Cloud State, Miettinen posted 118 points across 146 games without taking a single penalty.
"Veeti Miettinen won't return to St. Cloud State for a 5th season and will turn pro, he confirmed on IG.

He finishes his NCAA career with 53 goals and 118 points in 146 games. Didn't take a single penalty over 4 seasons."
It is uncertain whether or not Veeti Miettinen would have ever received a deal with the Maple Leafs, but he will undoubtedly have success in his home country of Finland. Hopefully, Toronto will learn to keep their best prospects closer in the future.
