The NHL is starting to look alive again, now that all 32 teams are engaged in the rigors of training camp weeks ahead of the regular season. Among those getting fans excited are the Toronto Maple Leafs, who shared their official training camp groups just days ago.
Unfortunately, Toronto had to start training camp short a few players, all due to injuries. Among these players are two top prospects Fraser Minten who suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Rookie Showdown, and Ben Danford, who is recovering from a concussion. Additionally, the Maple Leafs would be short Connor Dewar and Ryan Tverberg while undergoing shoulder surgeries.
However, the Toronto Maple Leafs are once again drawing the short stick, as one more player has left training camp after a likely injury. After PTO Steven Lorentz was pulled ahead of today's session with an upper-body injury, Kyle Clifford became the latest player forced off the ice. Though there are no specific accounts of what occurred, he was seen putting less weight on his foot as he made his way out of the rink.
Kyle Clifford, now 33 years old, last played for the Maple Leafs in the 2022-23 season, only appearing in 2 games. He has, instead played with their AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies, posting 10 goals and 28 points in 53 games last season. In his 753 career NHL games, he has recorded 66 goals, 144 total points, and a staggering 905 penalty minutes. Though he was unlikely to make a major presence with the Maple Leafs in the upcoming season, the Marlies could be in trouble should his injury require special attention. Hopefully, this will only be a minor setback for the NHL veteran.
