John Tavares recently stepped aside as Toronto Maple Leafs captain, and now he's nearing an extension, but one analyst believes it shouldn't happen at all.

The past few days have been a whirlwind in Toronto, with long-time captain John Tavares officially stepping aside, making room for the face of the franchise Auston Matthews to take on the role. The reports behind the scenes have been that there will be no tension on the ice, as the two have a fantastic rapport on and off the ice, but now, there's been a new twist in the saga of the Core Four.
According to reports, there is potentially an extension on the way for Tavares, and while some believe this could be a good move to give the team depth down the middle for years to come, Bryan Hayes of TSN questions why that would be the move for Toronto.
"Well, and even putting the value aside, this is what I find a bit confusing. There's this big debate over, alright, what should the number be? Before you even get to that, should he be here at all? Like, that's-again, the core four-this is where there's a divide in the fan base, and there always will be," Hayes said (via TSN).

This is a fair question from Hayes, as the team don't believe in Tavares as a top leader anymore, and with his production dipping and the famed core four yet to achieve anything, letting him walk could allow the organization a major reset. There's still plenty of things left to happen between now and an official extension, and at this point, it could go either way, so we will now wait and see how it plays out.
