Finnish Olympian Paralyzed From Waist-Down After On-Ice Accident

We all know that hockey is a dangerous sport. The hockey world has been reminded of that all too often this year. Now another tragedy has occurred as one young hockey player had her life changed possibly forever during her last game.

Finish Hockey Star Sanni Hakala Paralyzed After On-Ice Collision

Sanni Hakala is a 26 year old women, currently under contract with HV71's women's team in the Swedish women's pro league, the SDHL. If their last game against Djurgården, Hakala lost her balance and fell head-first into the goal post. She reportedly stayed on the ice motionless for a substantial period of time before she was eventually stretchered off. Both teams agreed to pause the game due to the nature of the injury. In tonight's SDHL match between HV71 and Djurgården, forward Sanni Hakala was seriously injured during a match situation. Sanni is taken by ambulance to hospital and the teams have agreed not to resume the match tonight, but to continue playing at a later date. We are thinking of you Sanni! 💙💛
It has since been reported that Hakala has no feeling from the waist down, indicating that she has been paralyzed.
