Ilya Kovalchuk Comes Out Of Retirement After Two-Year Hiatus

Ilya Kovalchuk is one of the more interesting players to come through the NHL is recent memory. The former 1st overall pick had a long tumultuous career in North America before he finally returned to Russia after the 2019-20 season. He played one more year in the KHL before finally calling it quits in 2021. Until now that is.

Kovalchuk Comes Out Of Retirement To Play In KHL

Today it was announced that Kovalchuk has signed a one-year deal with Spartak Moskva of the KHL.

The 40-year-old last played professional hockey in the 2020-21 season in which he scored 17 points in 16 games for Avangard Omsk. He also played in 24 playoff games in route to a Gagarin Cup Championship. He was still one of the best players in the league when he seemingly decided to call it quits following that season.

He will sign a 1-year contract with @spartak_hc, per insider @Artur_Khairul

Kovalchuk hasn't played for 2.5 years. After the 2020-21 season, his Value was over $1.1m and he was TOP 10 KHL player
Kovalchuk was drafted 1st overall all the way back in 2001. He played in 926 career NHL games and recorded 443 goals and 876 points throughout his career. He was a two-time all-star and the winner of the 2003-04 Maurice Richard trophy for leading the league in goals.
