This past weekend it was announced that a Russian amateur goaltender had passed away. 62-year-old Nikolai Kuznetsov reportedly collapsed on the ice and was unresponsive shortly after warmups began.
A statement from the Director of the SHL which is the Russian Amateur League that Kuznetsov was playing in provides some more insight.

What is the cause of death? We don't yet have all the information ourselves. I personally wasn't here at the game. It happened late. Goalkeeper Nikolai Kuznetsov was 62 years old. We are in touch with the hockey player's relatives. We will help them in everything." Director of SHL (Russian amateur league) Sergei Stolyarov
Further reports indicate that Kuznetsov was not afforded proper care once he collapsed due to a league policy.
League Policy Contributes To Passing Of Amateur Hockey Player
According to further statements from league director Sergei Stolyarov, there was not any medical personnel or ambulances on site. This lack of medical presence meant that the only people able to try and help save Kuznetsov's life were people there for the game.
We talked with the teams before the season. They refused to take ambulances because it would make the championship more expensive. We will gather the division council. We are definitely in favor of ambulances being present at matches."
Paramedics did eventually arrive but it was too late and Kuznetsov had unfortunately already passed. This is the second incident like this in Russia this year alone. Hopefully, these leagues will begin to take safety more seriously in the future.
