Tobias Eder, a pro hockey player from Germany, received the shock of a lifetime while undergoing routine testing for the 2024-25 Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) season
Every hockey player in every pro league around the world will undergo routine testing as teams prepare for training camps and preseason play. For the NHL, training camps will open in September. However, several other pro leagues around the world are getting training camps and preseason games underway now. One of the players taking part has received some devastating news after undergoing physical testing.
Tobias Eder has spent his entire pro hockey career in his home country of Germany. After four seasons with Duesseldorf, the 26-year-old forward started 2023-24 with Eisbaren Berlin, or in English, the Berlin Polar Bears, and went on to win the DEL championship with the team. Eder then went on to represent Germany at the 2024 IIHF World Hockey Championship. After a summer break, Eder recently met back up with his teammates in Berlin to start preparing for 2024-25, but was hit with some awful news. In a news release, Eibaren Berlin said
routine testing revealed the Eder is "seriously Ill," and that a malignant tumor has been discovered. "In moments like these, the sporting aspect takes a back seat. We are all shocked by Tobi's illness. His news hit everyone at the Eisbären like a blow and they have to process it first. The most important thing from now on is Tobi's full recovery and that he gets well again. That is our top priority. He and his entire family will undoubtedly receive all the support they need from us. We wish them a lot of strength and optimism. We are with them in these difficult times." - Eisbären managing director Thomas Bothstede

It sounds as though Eder was not aware he was even sick until the testing was done. However, the team and the player have asked for privacy as Eder and his family deal with the terrible news.
"Tobias Eder and the Eisbären Berlin ask for your understanding that no further statements will be made beyond the information provided. Please refrain from asking further questions."
As mentioned by managing director Thomas Bothstede, the most important thing is that Eder gets healthy, and pulls through his battle with cancer. He will have the entire hockey community in Germany, and around the world pulling for his full recovery. Hopefully the tumor was caught early enough because of the testing to allow medical professionals to do something about it.
