The Colorado Avalanche won the coveted Stanley Cup in 2022 and they're not done chasing glory yet. They have a star-studded roster poised for more success, but a tight budget could pose challenges in the years ahead.

Securing Toews is Critical

Cale Makar shines as the standout in the Avalanche's top pairing, but it's Devon Toews, one of the league's most overlooked talents, who provides the ideal balance. He excels on the defensive side, boasts impressive analytics, and seamlessly complements the superstar Makar. With Toews on the brink of becoming an unrestricted free agent, it's crucial for Colorado to secure his services.

However, keeping Toews might come with a hefty price tag. The Athletic predicts that his next contract could range between $8 million and $10.3 million with maximum term. As Toews is nearing 30, this would be a substantial investment, but it's one the Avalanche should make.

Looking Ahead: Navigating the Cap

Despite an increasing salary cap, the Avalanche will need to make tough decisions in the near future. Stars Mikko Rantanen, Bowen Byram, and Alexander Georgiev are set to become free agents in 2025, and the team will likely want to retain their services.
In light of these financial constraints, Samuel Girard may find himself on the trading block. He has been a valuable member of the Avalanche, but reallocating his $5-million contract could be necessary to maintain the core group that has fueled the team's success. A trade involving Girard could be in the cards this season.
