With the 22-year-old forward having asked for a trade ahead of time, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving should try to trade Nick Robersrton out of Toronto before training camp.

After another failed run in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs must work overtime to keep players dedicated to the team amidst historic adversity. However, with little success and even less ice time, 22-year-old forward Nick Roberston has asked for a trade.
Nick Roberston recorded 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games with a little over eleven minutes of ice time on average. Now, as a restricted free agent, he will likely look for a better chance to make his mark on a different NHL team. Yet, according to analysts, Toronto GM Brad Treliving should try to make this trade happen before training camp. According to Shane Seney of The Leafs Nation, the sooner a deal is made, the fewer distractions Craig Berube will face as the new head coach. Additionally, the longer the Maple Leafs go without a Nick Roberston deal, the less leverage they have overall.
"Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving needs to take care of business before the team reports for training camp, limit the distractions for new head coach Craig Berube and ensure he gets a comparable return for the disgruntled Robertson.

One of the problems with a trade request is the fact it takes away a ton of leverage for Treliving. 31 other general managers know Robertson doesn't want to be in Toronto and will be trying to pry him out of town, without giving up a huge return. Treliving on the other hand, can't miss with this trade. The Maple Leafs are thin at left wing, even with Easton Cowan potentially in the picture and if Robertson gets dealt, and they aren't landing a top-nine forward who is versatile to move around the lineup, it should be considered a loss for Treliving, even though his hands are tied with Robertson's demands."
While there is no doubt that after Sheldon Keefe's five-year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team needs Craig Berube's full attention on coaching the players who will stay on his roster throughout the upcoming season. Yet, if Nick Robertson puts up an impressive start to the season, Toronto could get a better return for the young forward. Regardless, they can expect to release the player before too long.
