The Patrick Kane sweepstakes are still alive and well. Kane is reportedly progressing well from his injury and could be back sooner than everyone thought. With this in mind, two Canadian teams could be the perfect fit for Kane once he decides to sign.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs finally made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2022. They still ultimately failed to win and will be looking to chase a Stanley Cup this upcoming season.
The Maple Leafs added depth scoring this summer signing players like Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi. Both of these players bring a physical presence and offensive upside but can be inconsistent.
With these signings and the breakout that Matthew Knies seemed to have at the end of last year a path to top-six minutes for Kane seems unlikely. He would more likely play on a third line with an emphasis on providing offense. His defensive ability leaves a lot to be desired which means he likely can't be trusted on a shutdown line.
Edmonton Oilers
The fit with the Edmonton Oilers for Patrick Kane is much easier to see. Besides players like Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins the Oilers struggle to score. Their next best option Evander Kane is coming off of a major wrist injury.
If Patrick Kane were brought in he would likely get an immediate shot in the top-six. This is where Kane would thrive the most playing in a highly offensive role that gets significant minutes. The risk is that if he struggles moving him into the bottom six could turn a shutdown line into a defensive nightmare potentially.
While both of these destinations would be a fun spot to see Kane go neither is all that likely probably. As Kane really ramps up his return it will be interesting to see what rumors fly around the most.
