Brendan Shanahan was recently asked about William Nylander's play and how the Leafs would be able to sign him, to which he promptly shrugged off the question with an interesting statement.
Shanahan Says You Shouldn't Be Worried About When Players Are Playing Well
William Nylander is having an insane contract year, already recording 29 points in just the first 22 games this season. However, this has caused some Leaf fans to worry that the Leafs won't have the Cap space to be able to sign Nylander if he continues his scoring pace.
Brendan Shanahan, on the other hand, says that it would be silly to worry that a player is performing too well during the season.

Clearly, it is going to be difficult to get a Nylander deal done. However, this doesn't mean that Leaf fans should start rooting against Nylander for performing.
Nylander Currently on the Best Contract in the League
If the Leafs are truly considering themselves a Stanley Cup Contender this year, they should be happy with how things are playing out with William Nylander. The Leafs should be able to take advantage of Nylander's tremendous play in his contract year, getting insane levels of production out of a $6.9 million player.
Patrick Marleau took up 8.3% of the cap in his first season with the Leafs.
