Ilya Samsonov will be heading into year two with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After a successful first campaign he will be looking to improve for the upcoming year. Today it was announced that Samsonov will have a new look heading into the upcoming season.
Samsonov Reveals New Mask
Today Ilya Samsonov revealed his new goalie mask as part of a media day for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The new design shows a menacing creature on the front of the mask. There are also of course the traditional blue and white colors of the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout the helmet. Some who have seen the helmet believe it looks awfully familiar.
Samsonov Honoring Cujo?
Curtis Joseph had one of the most iconic masks in NHL history. The mask is based off the movie that he shares his nickname with Cujo.
The design was worn by Joseph throughout most of his career. He would change up the design but always have the Cujo creature front and center.
Now it seems as though Samsonov has adopted the creature for the upcoming season. This is a nice tribute to the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Curtis Joseph himself.
Samsonov will look to improve his performance from last year particularly in the playoffs. If the Maple Leafs can have Samsonov unlock another level they might be able to finally push through to that elusive Stanley Cup championship.
