The province of Ontario has just taken a firm stance against online gambling commercials that feature celebrity endorsements!
Starting in the end of February 2024, all viewers residing in Ontario can bid farewell to the familiar ads they've seen during Sportsnet broadcasts promoting companies like Bet653, MGM, and DraftKings. The move has been met with gratitude from fans considering the overwhelming quantity of these ads which interrupt our hockey games.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has officially announced this initiative, citing its intent to shield children and youth from the influence of such content. AGCO emphasizes that young individuals are particularly vulnerable to such advertising especially when these sites are being marketed as a place to "play games"
A Serious Problem
The decision follows mounting criticism from advocates, parents, and sports enthusiasts who voiced concerns about the escalating volume of online gambling advertisements during Sportsnet NHL broadcasts. For instance, a recent Stanley Cup Playoffs match between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers in 2023 reportedly featured almost 10 minutes of online gambling ads throughout the game, as reported by CP24.
This has not only become an issue for young adults and children but maybe even more so for adults struggling with addiction. Although it's not widely considered a drug, gambling is and can become a devastating problem for people struggling with addiction. These people are just trying to sit back and watch a hockey game but are being constantly reminded and tempted by these online casino companies. It's ridiculously immoral and it's nice to see Ontario step up and do something about it.
Renowned athletes, including Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews, Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, have made a significant amount of money while taking part in these recent online sports-betting promotions. However, their commercials will no longer grace screens in Ontario following the upcoming February.
