Officiating in the NHL has always been a contentious topic of debate. One thing we can all agree on is that NHL officiating generally is not good enough, but many fans believe the league has biases for and against specific teams. Statistical analysis of NHL penalty calls may actually prove that this is the case.

Stats Suggest The NHL Is Biased Against The Toronto Maple Leafs

Many fans of the Maple Leafs will swear on their mother's life that NHL referees are generally biased against the Leafs. Fans of other fanbases might suggest the exact opposite notion. The statistics show that Leafs fans may actually have a point.
While 5-on-3s are somewhat uncommon, most NHL fans would probably agree that they are not that rare. They are a common enough occurrence that most fans probably wouldn't even think about how long it has been since their team has gotten one. Unless they are Leafs fans. Since game one of the 2022-23 NHL season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have just one 5-on-3 power play.

The Minnesota Wild lead the league in 5-on-3 advantages with 22 since the start of the 2022-23 season. Meanwhile, it has been so long since the Leafs last got an opportunity to score 5 on 3, the player who scored the goal isn't even on the team anymore.

5-ON-3 POWERPLAY GOAL! 71 GAMES IN THE MAKING!
One could point to these facts as evidence that the NHL is indeed rigged against the Leafs, at least when it comes to handing out power plays. Leafs fans themselves can be the judge of this new information.
