Brendan Shanahan is not short on choices for the role of general manager at the Toronto Maple Leafs. A fascinating suggestion, however, has been made.

A Forgotten Contender in the GM Hunt: Jim Nill

Carlo Colaiacovo, during a recent session on TSN 1050 radio, brought up a rather overlooked candidate, that being Jim Nill. Nill, an ex-NHL player, shares a professional history with Shanahan. Both men made notable contributions to the sport during their active years in Detroit.
Nill moved on to a scouting position with the Ottawa Senators post-retirement, then later with the Detroit Red Wings as lead of amateur scouting. In this capacity, he managed prospects in the AHL and European leagues, while also functioning as the general manager for the Adirondack Red Wings.
Nill's instrumental role in the Red Wings' four Stanley Cup wins can't be understated, with three of them occurring during Shanahan's stint with the team.
Carlo Colaiacovo remarked, pop
At the end of the day, we sit here and we wait to see what the Maple Leafs' plans are. I think a name that I heard pop up yesterday was Jim Nill of the Dallas Stars. He's got one year left on his deal and he's got a really close relationship with Brendan Shanahan from their days in Detroit.

I know Jim Nill really well from my time in Detroit, and I think he'd be an outstanding candidate for this job, so we'll see how this plays out, If that's a guy they choose to interview when Dallas gets eliminated. Clearly, right now, all the talk is Treliving, and we'll see if there's something that comes from it.

Overcoming Obstacles

In order for Nill to become the GM in Toronto, he would have to re-negotiate his existing contract with the Stars, which as of now, will be done in one year. Considering Shanahan is involved, it's an option he will most definitely look into, considering it'll give him the opportunity to work alongside Shanahan again.
