The NHL has taken measures in recent years to reduce the number of hits to the head there are in the game. Last night those measures were seen in action as Vegas forward Paul Cotter got a match penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Cotter Gets Match Penalty For Dirty Hit

On the play, Cotter stuck his arm out and appeared to intentionally make contact with the head of capitals forward Evgeni Kuznetsov. The head was the principal point of contact and the contact was easily avoidable, so the referees gave him a game misconduct.
Cotter has been a decent depth player for Vegas this season. Through 16 games he has 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points. He will need to avoid making such reckless plays in the future though. He may very well get a call from the Department of Player Safety.
