The Winnipeg Jets are seemingly a long way from a Stanley Cup in 2023-24, but just a few years ago, they were right on the doorstep, which makes this latest revelation even tougher to hear.

A hometown star

According to a recent report, the team were on the verge of landing Mark Stone, a Winnipeg native back in 2018 when they were just one round away from the Stanley Cup Finals.
The team reportedly did not want to give up prospect Jack Roslovic, and given his lack of success in Winnipeg, it makes this one hurt even more, as the Jets could have been the most stacked team in the Western Conference.

A missed opportunity

If the Jets landed Stone, they would have paired him with Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Nik Ehlers and Blake Wheeler, and it's safe to say that they would have been the best team out West at that point.
Since the no trade, Stone has gone on to captain the Vegas Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup, racking up consistent performances on a nightly basis, and of all the potential trades we've heard in recent years, this one is the most confusing as to why a team turned it down.
